5 Meaningful Ways to Give Back to Our Community This Summer

Volunteers are an essential piece of Mile High United Way’s work to help families thrive. When community members give their time and talents, we can build a brighter future for families.

Whether you have an hour to spare or are looking for a regular way to give back, there’s a place for you in our work. This summer, you can help stock shelves, fill backpacks, assemble care kits and support families in tangible ways that make a lasting difference.

Here are five summer volunteering opportunities to give back and engage in our mission this summer and beyond:

1. Volunteer at Our New Community Corner

Opening this summer, the Community Corner is a new way to serve our neighbors. Families visiting the Community Corner can receive fresh groceries and take advantage of other Mile High United Way programs, including free tax preparation help and 211 Colorado services.

Volunteers will be a critical part of the Community Corner. Whether you’re refreshing supplies or helping families shop for food, your support will help create a memorable experience for neighbors seeking support.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Receiving, sorting and stocking food
  • Assisting clients with the intake process
  • Helping families shop
  • Running drives for pantry staples, seasonings, and hygiene items
  • Packing kits of pantry staples

Both one-time and recurring volunteer opportunities are available for corporate groups, individuals or community groups.

Email communitycorner@unitedwaydenver.org to learn more or register for the information session on Thursday, July 9, at 12 p.m. (virtual). A recording of the session will be available for those unable to attend live.

2. Support School Readiness at Our Back to School Bash

We know the average back-to-school supply list can cost over $200, which isn’t feasible for many families. You can help kids start the year strong with a new backpack and the supplies they need by joining our Back to School Bash.

Volunteer opportunities include running a school supply drive, purchasing supplies for a student, making a monetary donation or volunteering at the family distribution later this summer. Our Back to School Bash is a great way to give back with your friends, coworkers, family or community group. Learn more and get involved today!

3. Volunteer at Our Building for United Way Wednesdays

Each month, we welcome volunteers to our building for “United Way Wednesdays.” The two-hour block includes a tour of our building to learn about our work, followed by a volunteer activity. United Way Wednesdays offer a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges facing our community and immediately take action to help address them.

Activities may include sorting donations or helping prepare for an upcoming event. Individuals, small groups or company teams are all welcome. To learn more or register for an upcoming United Way Wednesday, please email volunteer@unitedwaydenver.org.

5. Join a Donor Network

Looking for a deeper way to create change? Our donor networks bring together passionate community members who believe every family deserves the opportunity to thrive. We are grateful for the many ways in which our donors engage with our work. We invite you to consider joining a donor network this summer to help create lasting change in our community.

What’s Ahead

Later this fall, we invite you to volunteer with our Tax Help Colorado program, donate Thanksgiving baskets for families, or support the 53rd annual Mile High United Way Turkey Trot.

When you volunteer, you help a child prepare for school, help a family put food on the table or connect a neighbor to support when they need it most.
