U.S. Bank Sets New Record with Employee Giving

U.S. Bank employees

U.S. Bank has a long-running employee campaign to support Mile High United Way, and this year, they took it to new heights. Their recent campaign achieved a 34% increase in the number of donors and raised an additional $30,000 over last year, pushing their total giving to over $200,000!

“We’ve been part of Mile High United Way’s campaign since the beginning. Our employees have always been incredibly generous, but our workplace campaign had plateaued. We knew we needed to shake it up,” said Darren Markley, SVP, The Private Client Reserve at U.S. Bank.

U.S. Bank met with campaign strategists at Mile High United Way and devised a plan to revive their campaign. Some analysis showed that past campaigns had done a great job of engaging the Downtown Denver leadership core but were barely visible to the employees at the 75 regional branches, a subsidiary company and the processing center, which adds up to a total of 1,700 employees in the Denver Metro area.

To get the word out, U.S. Bank substantially increased pre-campaign communications for the eight weeks leading up to the campaign launch. These weekly internal emails were aimed at better informing employees about the work and impact of Mile High United Way. The emails also contained trivia questions which, when answered by an employee, entered them into a drawing for $25 gift cards. The trivia questions were a big hit and substantially increased the open rates on the emails.

The company also expanded their kickoff events to include fun team building like a trike race (pictured above) and a silent auction to build excitement and awareness.

Another key to the campaign’s success was choosing their Emerging Leaders (a cohort of 15 rising leaders within U.S. Bank) to serve as campaign advocates. The Emerging Leaders attended training on Mile High United Way and effective workplace campaign strategies, received a toolkit and visited employees at bank branches to talk about the campaign.

Darren Markley and all of the leaders at U.S. Bank were thrilled with the energy and outcome of the campaign. “This year’s campaign had new vitality. It was great to involve U.S. Bank’s Emerging Leaders and ensure that the campaign reached every corner of our organization. At U.S. Bank, we're actively engaged in developing, strengthening and energizing our community so our support of Mile High United Way makes perfect sense.”
