Alyssa's 2-1-1 Success Story
From Rent Assistance to Self-Sufficiency
Alyssa Eckert, whose only income came from disability, was in the process of being evicted from her apartment last January. Not sure where else to turn she called Mile High United Way’s 2-1-1, a resource that she had used a few times in the past. “Sometimes I find myself in need of assistance on an emergency basis. It has always been helpful to call 2-1-1, especially for assistance with rent and utilities,” she explains.
On the eve of eviction, this was certainly an emergency situation. Luckily, Mile High United Way referred Alyssa to Jewish Family Services of Colorado. Working with Mile High United Way for 125 years, Jewish Family Services is a long-time partner that helps adults and families reach self-sufficiency through a number of services. With a bit of luck and some newfound support, Alyssa was able to keep her apartment and is still living there today.
After she resolved her living situation, Alyssa took control of her life by utilizing many other assistance programs that offer support for community members in need. She took advantage of the organization’s counseling sessions that help adults manage their finances and find work. She also got connected with the Weinberg Food Bank. This collective nature of many forms of support, working in conjunction with one another, is invaluable; and it is what makes 2-1-1 and Mile High United Way so impactful in helping solve larger issues.
“I am in awe of what Jewish Family Services has done for me and I am thankful that Mile High United Way put me in touch with them,” she says. What started as a simple phone call to 2-1-1 to avoid eviction evolved into a journey to find a more permanent solution to her larger struggles, with the ultimate goal of self-sufficiency.
Calling Mile High United Way’s 2-1-1 is a starting point for community members in need, but it can also lead to a lifelong solution for much larger concerns—ones similar to Alyssa’s. Through Mile High United Way’s 2-1-1, thousands of people can find the diverse, long-term support they need. This support is a manifestation of Mile High United Way’s effort to offer viable solution to community-wide issues.
